Our Story

Since opening our doors in 2003, The Smoke Zone has grown from an empty storefront into one of Vancouver Islands best-known head shops. Over the years, we've renovated the store, sponsored local events, supported musicians and race teams, and built lasting relationships with our customers. Today, customers travel from across Vancouver Island—including Victoria, Duncan, Port Alberni, and beyond—to visit The Smoke Zone. We invite you to explore our journey through the years.

2003- Building The Smoke Zone

In 2003, we took possession of an empty storefront in downtown Nanaimo with a vision and a lot of determination. Starting from scratch meant finding creative ways to build the store on a limited budget. Rather than buying brand-new fixtures, we searched classified ads, used fixture warehouses, and second-hand stores across Vancouver Island to find display cases, shelving, and anything else we could repurpose.                                                                                                                                                                                   Many of the fixtures have their own story. Some of the orange display cases came from an old Shell gas station dating back to the 1970s, while the large display cases along the back wall began life as bakery showcases before being rebuilt with custom glass shelving and velvet-lined interiors. After work, one friend was hired to paint the walls. Slowly we assembled displays, built showcases, stocked shelves, and slowly filled the empty space with products from around the world and handcrafted glass from local artists. These photos capture more than the construction of the store—they preserve a snapshot of the smoking culture of the early 2000s. You'll see Cannabis Culture magazines, acrylic bongs, brass and metal pipes, early rolling paper displays, handcrafted local glass, and many products that have long since disappeared from store shelves. Looking back today, these images have become a small piece of cannabis history.

2004 – 2005 Finding Our Identity

By 2004, The Smoke Zone had grown beyond a new business and was beginning to develop its own identity. With the store established, our focus shifted from simply filling shelves to creating a place unlike anything else on Vancouver Island.

One of the biggest changes was introducing the character logo that many customers still recognize today. The original artwork was created for Craig of Shockwave Glass, whose handcrafted glass we proudly carried in the early years. After receiving his permission, we adapted the design by adding the Innerstate 420 patch on the hat and a few custom touches, creating the version that has represented The Smoke Zone for more than two decades.

Outside, we continued improving the storefront by replacing the temporary plastic railing with a custom-built steel railing that still stands today. These upgrades helped give the shop its distinctive look and made it more inviting for customers visiting downtown Nanaimo.

Inside, the store continued to evolve. We purchased an old tobacco display cabinet from our neighbour the former Save-On Gas Station that closed down in 2004 and gave it a second life with the help of local artist Troy of Roadshow Airbrushing & Graphic Design. He transformed the cabinet into a one-of-a-kind display, painting colourful koi fish and a dragon on one side, while the other featured skulls, flames, and graffiti-inspired Smoke Zone artwork.

Troy’s creativity extended throughout the shop, with custom murals, hand-painted snowboard decals, and artwork that helped create an atmosphere unlike any traditional retail store. Every visit offered customers something new to discover.

As our reputation grew, so did our selection. The display cases gradually filled with handcrafted pipes and water pipes from talented British Columbia glass artists, including Shockwave Glass, Pee Jay Glass, Hi-Guy Glass, Benz Glass, John’s Glass from Glass Alchemy, Ion Glass, Lethal Glass, Gibson Glass, Iceberg Glass and many more. Alongside accessories from around the world. Supporting local glassblowers was an important part of our business from the beginning. As the industry evolved, we expanded our inventory to include more affordable imported glass, giving customers a wider range of choices while continuing to showcase Canadian craftsmanship.

The storefront also became a place where people gathered. At the time, smoking cigarettes and cigars inside businesses was still permitted in British Columbia. That changed in 2008 when indoor smoking was prohibited throughout the province, marking the end of an era.

Community has always been an important part of The Smoke Zone. During these years we supported local artists, musicians, and racers, including sponsoring Cam’s dwarf race car. These partnerships reflected what The Smoke Zone has always been about—supporting local talent and building lasting relationships.

By the end of 2006, The Smoke Zone had grown from a small independent shop into a destination known throughout Vancouver Island. Built through hard work, creativity, and the support of our customers and community, those early years laid the foundation for everything that followed.
